Electromagnetische
straling kan oa het volgende veroorzaken:
-

gemaakt.

Effects of 50 Hz electromagnetic
fields on the livers of chicken embryos
Results showed extensive hemorrhages all
over the chicken embryos' bodies and livers, more lymphoid tissues, disturbed parenchymal
tissues, sinusoid denaturation, vesiculizad cytoplasm, an increase in the number of
apoptotic cells, and a decrease on the levels of expressions of c-Fos and ?-Catenin genes
in experimental groups of 1-4, comparing control and sham groups.
Effects of sinusoidal
electromagnetic fields brains of chicken embryos
Results showed electromagnetic fields have
toxic effects on brain cells by increasing the number of apoptotic cells and degeneration
of brains' tissues of exposed chicken embryos. These findings suggest that the
electromagnetic fields induce brain damages at different levels.
Melatonin as a most important
factor of natural electromagnetic fields impacting patients
Part 1 of this review is devoted to modern
concepts of mechanisms of action of weak natural and artificial electromagnetic fields
(EMF) on the cardiovascular system at the cellular, molecular, and atomic levels with the
participation of Ca2+ and melatonin. EMF are known to affect Ca2+ homeostasis and suppress
melatonin activity in a wide wavelength range. Ca2+ ions in pinealocytes are involved in
regulation of cAMP synthesis that mediates conversion of serotonin into melatonin. Their
leakage from pinealocytes results in a decrease of the cAMP level and thereby suppresses
production of melatonin. At the same time, the cyclic circadian rhythm of melatonin
secretion controls the overall activity of human body from eating to sleep and metabolism.
Influence of exposure to extremely
low frequency magnetic field on neuroendocrine cells and hormones in stomach of rats
Our study revealed that ELF-MF exposure
might influence the activity of endocrine cells, an important element of the intrinsic
regulatory system in the digestive tract. The pathophysiological character of these
changes and the mechanism responsible for neuroendocrine cell are still unclear and
require further studies.
Epidemiological Evidence for a
Health Risk from Mobile Phone Base Stations
Despite variations in the design, size and
quality of these studies as summarized in Table 1, it is the consistency of the
base-station epidemiological literature from several countries that we find striking. In
particular, the increased prevalence of adverse neurobehavioral symptoms or cancer in
populations living at distances < 500 meters from base stations found in 80% of the
available studies. It should be pointed out that the overall findings of health problems
associated with base stations might be based on methodological weaknesses, especially
since exposure to RF electromagnetic radiation was not always measured.
Charles Graham, PhD, physiologist at the
Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, MO., has conducted studies indicating that
electromagnetic radiation alters hormone levels. When women were exposed to elevated
levels of EMR overnight in the laboratory serum estrogen levels increased. Studies have
shown that elevated estrogen levels are a risk for cancer development. Also, testosterone
levels in men were reduced following exposure to EMR. Reduced testosterone levels have
been linked to prostate and testicular cancers.

Bescherming arbeiders van de EU
tegen schadelijke elektromagnetische straling
is vereist.
arbeiders tijdens hun professionele activiteiten.

in sperma.

Witness Statement April 2010
Many people suffer one or more of a wide
variety of symptoms when exposed to weak non-ionising electromagnetic radiation, including
that from cell phones and Wi-Fi. Those responsible for the radiation deny that these
effects exist, saying that there is no plausible explanation. In this submission I explain
just how these effects can arise, and how virtually all of them share one of two common
mechanisms. The pieces of the jigsaw fit together remarkably well and leave little doubt
that the majority of the reported effects are real and must be taken seriously. Knowledge
of the mechanisms makes it possible to mitigate the worst of these effects and I have made
a number of suggestions as to how this might be done. I have also explained how a simple
test, taking just a day or two to perform, could be used to assess the biological safety
of both new and existing wireless technologies. Until this has been done, it would be wise
to halt the roll-out of new wireless technologies and withdraw from sale particularly
hazardous items such as DECT baby monitors which radiate continuously next to a very young
child.
Rusland - Confirmation studies of
Soviet research on immunological effects of microwaves
This paper presents the results of a
replication study performed to investigate earlier Soviet studies conducted between 1974
and 1991 that showed immunological and reproductive effects of long-term low-level
exposure of rats to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields. The early studies were
used, in part, for developing exposure standards for the USSR population and thus it was
necessary to confirm the Russian findings. In the present study, the conditions of RF
exposure were made as similar as possible to those in the earlier experiments: Wistar rats
were exposed in the far field to 2450 MHz continuous wave RF fields with an incident power
density in the cages of 5 W/m˛ for 7 h/day, 5 days/week for a total of 30 days, resulting
in a whole-body SAR of 0.16 W/kg. Effects of the exposure on immunological parameters in
the brain and liver of rats were evaluated using the complement fixation test (CFT), as in
the original studies, and an additional test, the more modern ELISA test. Our results,
using CFT and ELISA, partly confirmed the findings of the early studies and indicated
possible effects from non-thermal RF exposure on autoimmune processes. The RF exposure
resulted in minor increases in formation of antibodies in brain tissue extract and the
exposure did not appear to be pathological. In addition, a study was conducted to
replicate a previous Soviet study on effects from the injection of blood serum from
RF-exposed rats on pregnancy and foetal and offspring development of rats, using a similar
animal model and protocol. Our results showed the same general trends as the earlier
study, suggesting possible adverse effects of the blood serum from exposed rats on
pregnancy and foetal development of intact rats, however, application of these results in
developing exposure standards is limited.
Slovakije - Effects of
short-duration electromagnetic radiation on early postnatal neurogenesis in rats
The immediate effects of whole body
electromagnetic radiation (EMR) were used to study postnatal neurogenesis in the
subventricular zone (SVZ) and rostral migratory stream (RMS) of Wistar rats of both sexes.
Newborn postnatal day 7 (P7) and young adult rats (P28) were exposed to pulsed
electromagnetic fields (EMF) at a frequency of 2.45GHz and mean power density of
2.8mW/cm(2) for 2h. Post-irradiation changes were studied using immunohistochemical
localization of Fos and NADPH-d. We found that short-duration exposure induces increased
Fos immunoreactivity selectively in cells of the SVZ of P7 and P28 rats. There were no Fos
positive cells visible within the RMS of irradiated rats. These findings indicate that
some differences exist in prerequisites of proliferating cells between the SVZ and RMS
regardless of the age of the rats. Short-duration exposure also caused praecox maturation
of NADPH-d positive cells within the RMS of P7 rats. The NADPH-d positive cells appeared
several days earlier than in age-matched controls, and their number and morphology showed
characteristics of adult rats. On the other hand, in the young adult P28 rats, EMR induced
morphological signs typical of early postnatal age. These findings indicate that EMR
causes age-related changes in the production of nitric oxide (NO), which may lead to
different courses of the proliferation cascade in newborn and young adult neurogenesis.
USA - Pooled analysis of recent
studies on magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia
Our results are in line with previous
pooled analyses showing an association between magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia.
Overall, the association is weaker in the most recently conducted studies, but these
studies are small and lack methodological improvements needed to resolve the apparent
association. We conclude that recent studies on magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia do
not alter the previous assessment that magnetic fields are possibly carcinogenic.
Italië - Brain DNA damage and
70-kDa heat shock protein expression in CD1 mice exposed to extremely low frequency
magnetic fields
An increase in primary DNA damage was
detected in all cerebral areas of the exposed mice sacrificed at the end of exposure, as
compared to controls. DNA damage, as can be evaluated by the comet assay, appeared to be
repaired in mice sacrificed 24 h after a 7-day exposure. Neither a short (15 h) nor long
(7 days) MF-exposure induced hsp70 expression, metabolic and behavioural changes. These
results indicate that in vivo ELF-MF induce reversible brain DNA damage while they do not
elicit the stress response.
Zuid Afrika - Effect of long-term
exposure to a randomly varied 50 Hz power frequency magnetic field on the fertility of the
mouse
A double blind study on BALB/c mice was
conducted to examine the effects of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields on
fertility. The mice were continuously exposed or sham-exposed from conception for two
generations to magnetic fields varying between 0.5 and 77 muT. Biological parameters
related to fertility were evaluated. Serum testosterone levels and mass of testes and
adrenals were determined. No significant difference was found between the sham-exposed and
exposed groups for all the biological endpoints, except for sperm motility. A significant
difference between the two groups was found prior to the swim-up test with quantitative
analysis of sperm motility as well as after the swim-up test for quantitative and
qualitative analysis of sperm motility. ELF-EMFs significantly decreased the number of
living sperm and the quality of movement of sperm, although these adversities did not
impact on the outcome of the other parameters investigated.
Polen - Effects of extremely low
frequency magnetic field on the parameters of oxidative stress in heart
Increasing production of free radicals in
organisms is one of the putative mechanisms by which a extremely low frequency magnetic
field (ELF-MF) may affect biological systems. The present study was designated to assess
if ELF-MF applied in the magnetotherapy, affects generation of reactive oxygen species
(ROS) in heart tissue and antioxidant capacity of plasma according to its working time.
The experiments were performed on 3 groups of animals: group I - control; group II -
exposed to 40 Hz, 7 mT, 30 min/day for 14 days (this field is commonly applied in
magnetotherapy); group III - exposed to 40 Hz, 7 mT, 60 min/day for 14 days. Control rats
were housed in a separate room without exposure to ELF-MF. Immediately after the last
exposure, blood was taken from the tail vein and hearts were removed under anesthesia. The
effect of the exposure to ELF-MF on oxidative stress was assessed on the basis of the
measurements of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), hydrogen peroxide
(H(2)O(2)), total free sulphydryl groups (-SH groups) and reduced glutathione (GSH)
concentrations in heart homogenates. The total antioxidant capacity of plasma was measured
using ferric reducing ability method (FRAP). Exposure to ELF-MF (40 Hz, 7 mT, 30 min/day
for 2 weeks) did not significantly alter tissue TBARS, H(2)O(2), total free -SH groups,
reduced glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant capacity of plasma. By contrast, ELF-MF
with the same frequency and induction but used for 60 min/day for 14 days caused
significant increase in TBARS and H(2)O(2) concentration (P<0.01) and decrease in the
concentration of GSH (P<0.05) and total free -SH groups in heart homogenates. Moreover,
exposure of rats to ELF-MF (40 Hz, 7 mT, 60 min/day for 2 weeks) resulted in the decrease
of plasma antioxidant capacity. Our results indicate that effects of ELF-MF on ROS
generation in the heart tissue and antioxidant capacity of plasma depend on its working
time.
USA - Electromagnetic fields and
cancer - the cost of doing nothing
Everyone is exposed to electromagnetic
fields (EMFs) from electricity (extremely low frequency, ELF), communication frequencies,
and wireless devices (radiofrequency, RF). Concern of health hazards from EMFs has
increased as the use of cell phones and other wireless devices has grown in all segments
of society, especially among children. While there has been strong evidence for an
association between leukemia and residential or occupational exposure to ELF EMFs for many
years, the standards in existence are not sufficiently stringent to protect from an
increased risk of cancer. For RF EMFs, standards are set at levels designed to avoid
tissue heating, in spite of convincing evidence of adverse biological effects at
intensities too low to cause significant heating. Recent studies demonstrate elevations in
rates of brain cancer and acoustic neuroma only on the side of the head where individuals
used their cell phone. Individuals who begin exposure at younger ages are more vulnerable.
These data indicate that the existing standards for radiofrequency exposure are not
adequate. While there are many unanswered questions, the cost of doing nothing will result
in an increasing number of people, many of them young, developing cancer.
Italië - Extremely low frequency
electromagnetic field exposure affects fertilization outcome in swine animal model
Modern society continuously exposes the
population to electromagnetic radiation, the effects of which on human health, in
particular reproduction, are still unknown. The aim of this research was to assess the
effect of acute (1h) exposure of boar spermatozoa to a 50 Hz extremely low frequency
electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) on early fertility outcome. The effect of intensities
ranging from 0 to 2 mT on morpho-functional integrity of capacitated spermatozoa was
examined in vitro. The oviducts containing or without spermatozoa were then exposed to the
minimum in vivo, TD(50,) and maximum intensities determined in vitro, 4h before ovulation.
The effects of ELF-EMF on spermatozoa in terms of early embryo development were evaluated
after 12h and 6 days. It was found that in vitro ELF-EMF > 0.5 mT induced a progressive
acrosome damage, thus compromising the ability of spermatozoa to undergo acrosomal
reaction after zona pellucida stimulation and reducing the in vitro fertilization outcome.
These effects became evident at 0.75 mT and reached the plateau at 1 mT. Under in vivo
conditions, the ELF-EMF intensity of 1 mT was able to compromise sperm function,
significantly reducing the fertilization rate. In addition, the exposure of oviducts to
fields > or = 0.75 mT in the absence of spermatozoa was able to negatively affect early
embryo development. In fact, it was found to cause a slowdown in the embryo cleavage. In
conclusion, it was demonstrated how and at which intensities ELF-EMF negatively affect
early fertility outcome in a highly predictive animal model.
Turkije - Extremely Low-Frequency
Magnetic Field Decreased Calcium, Zinc and Magnesium Levels in Costa of Rat
Electromagnetic field (EMF) can affect
cells due to biochemical change followed by a change in level of ions trafficking through
membrane. We aimed to investigate possible changes in some elements in costa of rats
exposed to long-term extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF). Rats were exposed to
100 and 500 ?T ELF-MF, which are the safety standards of public and occupational exposure
for 2 h/day during 10 months. At the end of the exposure period, the samples of costa were
taken from the rats exposed to ELF-MF and sham. The levels of elements were measured by
using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry. Ca
levels decreased in the ELF-500 exposure group in comparison to sham group (p?<?0.05).
Statistically significant decrease was found in Mg levels in the ELF-500 exposure group in
comparison to sham and ELF-100 exposure groups (p?<?0.05). Zn levels were found to be
lower in the ELF-500 exposure group than those in the sham and ELF-100 exposure groups
(p?<?0.05). No significant differences were determined between groups in terms of the
levels of P, Cu and Fe. In conclusion, it can be maintained that long-term ELF-MF exposure
can affect the chemical structure and metabolism of bone by changing the levels of some
important elements such as Ca, Zn and Mg in rats.
China - Effects of chronic exposure
of power frequency magnetic field on
neurobehavior in rats
Compared with controls, no significant
difference was found in rats of MF1h group in any test. Rats in MF4h group showed
increased thigmotaxis, more grooming in the open field test; less time spent in open arms,
central part and more time spent in closed arms. However, no significant difference was
observed in the light/dark test in MF1h or MF4h group. Chronic ELF MF exposure has an
anxiogenic effect on rats, which is dependent on the daily exposure duration.

USA - Chronic exposure to ELF
fields may induce depression (1988)
Exposure to extremely-low-frequency (ELF)
electric or magnetic fields has been postulated as a potentially contributing factor in
depression. Epidemiologic studies have yielded positive correlations between magnetic-
and/or electric-field strengths in local environments and the incidence of
depression-related suicide. Chronic exposure to ELF electric or magnetic fields can
disrupt normal circadian rhythms in rat pineal serotonin-N-acetyltransferase activity as
well as in serotonin and melatonin concentrations. Such disruptions in the circadian
rhythmicity of pineal melatonin secretion have been associated with certain depressive
disorders in human beings. In the rat, ELF fields may interfere with tonic aspects of
neuronal input to the pineal gland, giving rise to what may be termed "functional
pinealectomy." If long-term exposure to ELF fields causes pineal dysfunction in human
beings as it does in the rat, such dysfunction may contribute to the onset of depression
or may exacerbate existing depressive disorders.
Sweden - Computer monitors and

Office workers who used computer monitors
(VDU's) had a significant reduction in circulating levels of melatonin over a course of
the working day, according to a study by researchers Drs. Bengt Arnetz of the Karolinska

was found during days at the office with no VDU use. According to the researchers;
"This suggests that there is a direct impact from the electromagnetic environment of
the VDU on levels of melatonin."

Sweden - Kjell Hansson Mild -
Electromagnetic fields
Kjell Hansson Mild, associate professor in
medical physics, is coming from the former National Institute for Working Life, and his
research is on electromagnetic fields (EMF) and effects on humans. He has mainly been
working on occupational exposure to EMF. Of special interest are the studies on
chromosomal damage in engine drivers and high voltage switchyard workers, as well as
different health aspects among RF-sealer workers. The problem being addressed today is
mobile phone exposure and the risk for brain tumours. He has published several scientific
papers on this in collaboration with professor Lennart Hardell, Oncology Dept., Örebro
University Hospital. One of the big questions today is the new EU directive on
occupational exposure to EMF and the consequences for working life. One of the groups that
will be affected is the personnel working near a magnetic resonance imaging scanner.
Hansson Mild and co-worker have surveyed the exposure near MRI machines and now
experiments are ongoing to see if the exposure in the scanner can affect the DNA
integrity.

Cell Phones Create Tumors
Lafayette Real Estate Broker Alan Marks,
57, had a grand mal seizure last year after 20-years of intense cell phone use. At the
time, he estimated a cell phone up to his head for at least 10,000 hours over those 20
years. One prominent doctor went on record that Marks' cell phone use likely caused his
golf ball-sized, malignant brain tumor, called an oligodendro glioma, which is adjacent to
where he held his cell phone. Surgeons removed as much cancer as they could, but now give
him 5, maybe 8 years to live. It's painful, said Ellie Marks, Alan's wife. It's horribly
painful, yet I want people to know that this is for real. About 90 percent of people in
the Bay Area press cell phones regularly to their heads. Some scientists say evidence of
long term harm from such intense use is growing.

Greece - short-term memory in mice
is affected by mobile phone radiation
The effects of mobile phone electromagnetic
fields (EMFs) were studied on a non-spatial memory task (Object Recognition Task - ORT)
that requires entorhinal cortex function. The task was applied to three groups of mice Mus
musculus C57BL/6 (exposed, sham-exposed and control) combined with 3 different radiation
exposure protocols. In the first protocol designated "acute exposure", mice 45
days old (PND45 - postnatal day 45) were exposed to mobile phone (MP) radiation (SAR value
0.22W/kg) during the habituation, the training and the test sessions of the ORT, but not
during the 10min inter-trial interval (ITI) where consolidation of stored object
information takes place. On the second protocol designated "chronic exposure-I",
the same mice were exposed for 17 days for 90min/per day starting at PND55 to the same MP
radiation. ORT recognition memory was performed at PND72 with radiation present only
during the ITI phase. In the third protocol designated "chronic exposure-II",
mice continued to be exposed daily under the same conditions up to PND86 having received
radiation for 31 days. One day later the ORT test was performed without irradiation
present in any of the sessions. The ORT-derived discrimination indices in all three
exposure protocols revealed a major effect on the "chronic exposure-I"
suggesting a possible severe interaction of EMF with the consolidation phase of
recognition memory processes. This may imply that the primary EMF target may be the
information transfer pathway connecting the entorhinal-parahippocampal regions which
participate in the ORT memory task.

Greece - Whole body exposure with
GSM 900MHz affects spatial memory in mice
Extended work has been performed worldwide
on the effects of mobile phone radiation upon rats' cognitive functions, however there is
great controversy to the existence or not of deficits. The present work has been designed
in order to test the effects of mobile phone radiation on spatial learning and memory in
mice Mus musculus Balb/c using the Morris water maze (a hippocampal-dependent spatial
memory task), since there is just one other study on mice with very low SAR level
(0.05W/kg) showing no effects. We have applied a 2h daily dose of pulsed GSM 900MHz
radiation from commercially available mobile phone for 4 days at SAR values ranging from
0.41 to 0.98W/kg. Statistical analysis revealed that during learning, exposed animals
showed a deficit in transferring the acquired spatial information across training days
(increased escape latency and distance swam, compared to the sham-exposed animals, on the
first trial of training days 2-4). Moreover, during the memory probe-trial sham-exposed
animals showed the expected preference for the target quadrant, while the exposed animals
showed no preference, indicating that the exposed mice had deficits in consolidation
and/or retrieval of the learned spatial information. Our results provide a basis for more
thorough investigations considering reports on non-thermal effects of electromagnetic
fields (EMFs).

Turkey - Effect of ELF electric
field on some on biochemistry characters
in the rat serum
The present study has investigated the
potential effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) electric field exposure on plasma
cholesterol and triglyceride levels of adult male rats. Sixty rats have been divided into
three independent groups randomly, 20 of which arranged as controls (without exposure to
50 Hz electric field), 20 of which have been exposed to a 50 Hz electric field for 10 days
and 20 of which have been exposed to a 50-Hz electric field for 30 days. Levels of total
cholesterol and triglyceride in plasma samples have been measured. Total cholesterol
concentration of the plasma in group 2 with short-term exposure and group 3 with long-term
exposure to 50 Hz EF (65.33 ± 15.31 mg/dL and 59.55 ± 15.01 mg/dL, respectively) has
showed significant decrease when compared with control groups (70.44 ± 19.60 mg/dL).
Also, plasma triglyceride showed similar changes (control: 84.44 ± 16.79 mg/dL, 67.33 ±
15.63 and 51.53 ± 14.17 mg/dL in group 1 and 2, respectively). Fifty Hz electric
field may decrease plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in rodents
significantly, especially with long-term exposure.

In 1983, Baker, Mather and Kennaugh of the
University of Manchester discovered "magnetic bones in human sinuses," a tiny,
shiny crystal of magnetite in the ethmoid bone located between the eyes, just behind the
nose. But studies show that humans have no capacity for direction finding by
magneto-reception. However since magnetite absorbs microwave radiation and reacts to
static and low-frequency fields, this means that fields from power lines, cellular
telephones, computers and monitors could be affecting us right now.

Cellular energy is now used for protection
rather than metabolism. Cell membranes harden, keeping nutrients out and waste products
in. Waste accumulating inside the cells creates a higher concentration of free radicals,
leading to both disruption of DNA repair (micronuclei) and cellular dysfunction. Unwanted
cell death occurs, releasing the micronuclei from the disrupted DNA repair into the fluid
between cells (interstitial fluid), where they are free to replicate and proliferate.
This, says Dr. Carlo, is the most likely mechanism that contributes to cancer. Damage
occurs to proteins on the cell membrane, resulting in disruption of intercellular
communication. When cells can't communicate with each other, the result is impaired
tissue, organ, and organism function. In the blood-brain barrier, for example, cells can't
keep dangerous chemicals from reaching the brain tissue, which results in damage.

Griekenland - Auditory Brainstem
Response Changes during Exposure to GSM-900 Radiation
The objective of the present study was to
investigate the possible electrophysiological time-related changes in auditory pathway
during mobile phone electromagnetic field exposure. Thirty healthy rabbits were enrolled
in an experimental study of exposure to GSM-900 radiation for 60 min and auditory
brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded at regular time-intervals during exposure. The
study subjects were radiated via an adjustable power and frequency radio transmitter for
GSM-900 mobile phone emission simulation, designed and manufactured according to the needs
of the experiment.
The prolongation of interval latencies
I-V and III-V indicates that exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phone
can affect the normal electrophysiological activity of the auditory system, and these
findings fit the pattern of general responses to a stressor.
Sweden - Work-related exposure to
extremely low-frequency magnetic
fields and dementia
We examined the association between
extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (EMF) and the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's
disease using all 9,508 individuals from the Study of Dementia in Swedish Twins (HARMONY)
with valid occupational and diagnostic data.
Level of EMF exposure was not
significantly associated with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. However, in stratified
analyses, medium and high levels of EMF exposure were associated with increased dementia
risk compared with low level in cases with onset by age 75 years (odds ratio: 1.94, 95%
confidence interval: 1.07-3.65 for medium, odds ratio: 2.01, 95% confidence interval:
1.10-3.65 for high) and in participants with manual occupations (odds ratio: 1.81, 95%
confidence interval: 1.06-3.09 for medium, odds ratio: 1.75, 95% confidence interval:
1.00-3.05 for high). Results with 42 twin pairs discordant for dementia did not reach
statistical significance.
Occupational EMF exposure appears
relevant primarily to dementia with an earlier onset and among former manual workers.
Frankrijk - Occupational and
residential exposure to electromagnetic fields and risk of brain tumours in adults
The aetiology of brain tumours remains
largely unknown. Among potential risk factors, exposure to electromagnetic fields is
suspected. We analysed the relationship between residential and occupational exposure to
electromagnetic field and brain tumours in adults.A case-control study was carried out in
southwestern France between May 1999 and April 2001. A total of 221 central nervous system
tumours (105 gliomas, 67 meningiomas and 33 neurinomas) and 442 individually age and
sex-matched controls selected from general population were included. Electromagnetic field
exposure (ELF and RF separately) was assessed in occupational settings through expert
judgement based on complete job-calendar, and at home by assessing the distance to power
lines with the help of a geographical information system. Confounders such as education,
use of home pesticide, residency in a rural area, and occupational exposure to chemicals
were taken into account. Separate analyses were performed for gliomas, meningiomas and
acoustic neurinomas.A non-significant increase in risk was found for occupational exposure
to EMF (OR=1.52, 0.92-2.51). This increase became significant for meningiomas, especially
when considering ELF separately (OR=3.02; 95 percent CI =1.10, 8.25). The risk of
meningioma was also higher in subjects living in the vicinity of power lines (<100m),
even if not significant (OR=2.99, 95% CI 0.86, 10.40).
These data suggest that occupational or
residential exposure to ELF may play a role in the occurrence of meningioma.
